When I was still in college, I was dating someone that lived out here, whose parents ran a production company. And someone at that production company who was working in casting knew I was a young actor, and was like, ‘I would love to send you out on an audition.’ And I was like, ‘Great.’ And it was for ‘The Invisible Man’ and I was like, ‘This is awesome, I’m gonna go.’ And I went out to wherever, and I get there and I’m like, ‘This looks a little sketchy.’ And I go into audition for ‘The Invisible Man’ and halfway through the audition they ask me to take my shirt off. And I was like, ‘Wait a tick.’
Turns out, the casting director at the production company had mixed up productions of 'The Invisible Man’ and there was simultaneously a movie being cast and a pornographic film being cast. And I went to the casting of the pornographic film. So my first audition in Hollywood was for a porno. And I don’t think my mom knows that story, so I’m sorry, mom.
“I think my darkest days were probably when I was catering. I would go to these parties and pass out hors d'oeuvres, and it’s like you’re invisible. I remember one catering captain told me that all you are is a tray that comes into their space for a moment and then you leave. It was one of the most depressing things I’ve ever been told.”
“We still live in this hetero-normative, patriarchal society that is intent on placing everything within these binaries. I really hope that — if not in my lifetime, my children’s lifetime — this won’t be a question, that we won’t need this.”

“I think when you’re dealing with very tenuous scenes and difficult and heavy subject matter, it’s important to be close intimately with your cast as friends, and be able to diffuse a lot of that tension and trust each other with the work.”
