One of my best friends has come out with me for this trip, and she reminded me of something rather embarrassing. I’ve known her for almost two decades, and she said, ‘When I first met you, you said, ‘Hi, my name’s Millie, and I want to be an actress.“ I was like, ‘God, that’s cringe-worthy’, but I was always determined.

Living in London as a student is tough. And my heart goes out to every single drama student in London because, as an actor, it’s a creative process that you are taking on, and if you don’t get to do it every day, it hurts.

Style, for me, means a lot of things. It’s self-expression. I think I am very fortunate to be in a position where what I do is so creative that it inspires my own personal style, be it in the sofa I get for my house, or the bright pink mental shoes I want to put on my feet or even in the way I cut my hair. I think a lot of the social media that we have at the moment are really exciting platforms to have at your fingertips. Instagram, Pinterest…all these brilliant things allow you to have a constant stimulus of creativity that can add to your own natural style. The key to style, in my eyes, is being able to have as many influences as possible, to broaden your horizons. You can shock yourself about what you are actually attracted to, what makes you happy and what puts a smile on your face.

I think the reason why strong women have such a powerful impact is that you’ve got the strength of a man with the heart and sensitivity of a woman.

The balance is having the confidence to go OK, I’m going to take that good thing, and try and believe two per cent of it and just be in that moment. Just being present, instead of looking over your shoulder”. For now I’m in a lovely spot. On a personal level, it’s been really nice to allow myself to just be me. I’m not Khaleesi. I stoop! I don’t get hit on a lot. Last year I could have been wearing a sandwich board and ringing a bell and nobody would have noticed!” Emilia Clarke  photographed by David Slijper for Harper’s Bazaar UK, June 2016

‘I’m normally surrounded by dudes. Doing Me Before You meant I didn’t have to be continually proving myself in a man’s world, having to try and force people to listen to me. I’ve got a really strong mum. I was brought up thinking that men and women are equal. It’s only as I’ve got older that I’ve been like: “Mum! What the f…? Why are they treating me differently because I’ve got a pair of tits?“’

Emilia Clarke for Bazaar, July 2016
